Sarah Boyack MSP has proposed a draft Member’s Bill to ensure policy development and implementation by public bodies is in line with principles of sustainable development and wellbeing.
This seeks to introduce a duty for public bodies to promote these principles and establishing a Commissioner for sustainable development and wellbeing.
The consultation for this proposal is now open and calls for a range of views on the draft Bill, in order to highlight potential problems, suggest improvements, and to generally refine and develop the policy.
As former Minister for Transport and Environment, Sarah Boyack’s proposed bill seeks to address the relationship between wellbeing, sustainable development and transport. She states:
“Sustainable development is essential to ensuring that both today’s citizens and future generations have the resources available to them to live well. For example, sustainable transport decisions – such as improving the accessibility of and increasing investment in public transport networks – could enable disabled people to travel more easily.”
