Programme for Government: Rail fare freeze welcomed, but what about bus fares?

6 September 2022

Responding to today’s Scottish Government Programme for Government announcement, Transform Scotland director Colin Howden commented:

“We’re very pleased that the government has frozen fares on ScotRail, which otherwise might have risen by 12%. But what’s missing is similar action on bus fares. A few days ago, the UK Government announced new grant funding to allow a temporary £2 cap on bus fares in England. We need to see something similar in Scotland, not least because bus users are typically on lower incomes than rail passengers.”

Transform Scotland published its ‘Stuck in Traffic’ report in advance of the PfG announcement. This report comments on the broad lack of progress on PfG transport commitments since the Climate Emergency focus of the 2019 PfG.
