Fee or free? Edinburgh’s workplace parking levy plans: Submit your views

29 January 2024

The City of Edinburgh Council are looking into the feasibility of a Workplace Parking Levy – and are looking for views ahead of 6 February 2024.

The Council currently has a survey open to collect the views of both individuals and organisations on the introduction of a levy which aims to motivate employers to discourage the provision of free car parking and car commuting.

Transform has submitted a response supporting the initiative, and encourages other to do so.

Transform policy advisor Chris Day comments:

“Workplace Parking Levies have two main goals: to refocus economic activity away from car travel towards sustainable transport, and to provide an income stream for transport investment.

“Our research points out that it would be vital to hypothecate levy revenues and most small businesses would probably be exempt. Meanwhile, larger businesses would most likely want any levy to be targeted at areas with good public transport links.

“Although only in the early stages, it is great to see action on this proposal to cut congestion and tackle car use in Edinburgh. We look forward to responding to a fair proposal in the next stages of the consultation.”
