Welcome for Borders & Fife rail electrification

5 September 2025

by Transform Scotland

FacebookTweetEmailLinkedIn

Transform Scotland has welcomed the Scottish Government’s announcement of the electrification of the Fife and Borders railways, and the procurement of new battery-electric trains.

Transform’s rail policy advisor Paul Tetlaw said:

“We welcome the announcement from Cabinet Secretary Fiona Hislop about the further decarbonisation of Scotland’s railway. Continuation of the electrification programme will ensure the teams maintain the necessary skills and so help to reduce unit costs.

“The new bi-mode trains to be ordered should provide a cleaner more welcoming environment for passengers and so help with modal shift to the train from the private car.
