Improvement to street environment can help protect older people from falls and fracturesPublished 30 September 2019 by Transform Scotland
Transform Scotland today responded to the Scottish Government’s consultation on ‘Falls and Fracture Prevention Strategy for Scotland, 2019-2024’.
Transform director Colin Howden said:
“The terrible state of disrepair in which much of Scotland’s streets are kept is known to be a factor which prevents many older people from even leaving their front doors for fear of suffering falls.
As such, it is disappointing that the street environment is given only one paragraph of treatment in the Strategy. The Scottish Government is currently engaged in the ‘Strategic Transport Projects Review 2’, and has set up the Infrastructure Commission for Scotland to make recommendations on Scotland’s transport and wider physical infrastructure. This Strategy should make reference to the opportunities afforded by these processes.”
