Extending bus lane hours better for bus users, cyclists, and pedestriansPublished 21 November 2019 by Transform Scotland
We have today published our response to The City of Edinburgh Council’s consultation on bus lane operational hours. We fully support the proposal that peak hour bus lanes are changed to operate between the hours of 7am and 7pm, seven days a week.
Bus lanes improve bus passenger journey times, increase bus service reliability, encourage the use of public transport, and provide a safer facility for cyclists and pedestrians, all of which encourage modal shift towards more sustainable transport.
Transform Scotland director Colin Howden said:
“Edinburgh is faced with an increasing population, a climate emergency and a public health crisis. All measures to improve mobility, cut greenhouse gas emissions and reduce pollution are to be welcomed. Bus lanes are important for bus users, cyclists and pedestrians, and promote modal shift to more sustainable forms of transport.
“The move to make bus lanes 7 to 7, 7 days a week makes complete sense in terms of sustainable transport, health and the environment and Transform Scotland fully supports the proposed changes.”
