Will Scotland be a champion for sustainable travel during the Euros?

5 March 2024

FacebookTweetEmailLinkedIn

Ahead of this year’s Euros we’ve sent an open letter to to the Scottish Football Association (SFA), calling for Scotland’s team to set an example and choose sustainable transport as they travel for the competition.

In the letter, we note that transport accounts for more than a third of CO2 emissions, with the majority of these emissions come from road transport and flying.

We believe football can play an important role in the fight against climate change, and the SFA can use its influence as a role model, both on and off the pitch, to help change people’s ways of thinking and travel behaviour and lead by example.

We call for the SFA to commit to travelling sustainably for Euro 2024, choosing low-emitting means of transport like rail and avoiding high-emitting flying, to and/or within Germany.

Director Colin Howden said:

“I’ve been following the Scotland football team since the 1978 World Cup, and in that time I’ve shared in every Scottish supporter’s disappointment that our team always gets knocked out in the first group stage.

I truly hope that Scotland can at last go deep into an international tournament. But if we end up repeating the repeating the failures of the past then at least our players will have plenty of time to take the train back home before pre-season.”
